2 1/2 already!

On April 20th Johnny was 2 1/2 years old! Here's a few things about Johnny right now:

  • He had an extremely impressive vocabulary and knowledge of grammar, often surprising me.
  • He can sing the entire alphabet and can identify roughly half the letters.
  • He weighs 30.5 pounds, and is shorter than most of his peers.
  • He loves helping around the house with chores.
  • He goes to bed around 8 and wakes up around 7. He always takes his blanket and orange teddy bear to bed.
  • He takes a 2 hour nap every afternoon.
  • He's in a big-boy bed and has adjusted fully to that change.
  • He understands things that are meant to be comical, such as seeing a picture of a baby pushing a mommy in a stroller - he laughed and said, that's funny!
  • He likes running around the track at the gym with mommy.
  • He likes to play around with identities, such as pretending he's Aunt Whitney and I'm Grandpa Wilbur. The characters are constantly changing.
  • He loves "driving" the cars, especially Grandpa's Jeep.
  • He sings along to numerous songs, and loves dancing with me to the radio.
  • Some of his favorite songs in Nursery: The Wise Man, 5 Little Monkeys, I am a Child of God, 5 Little Ducks, and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
  • He's very obedient with time-out and goes without any trouble.
  • Still doesn't watch much TV or movies. Movies he does like: Jungle Book, Finding Nemo, Charlotte's Web, and Winnie the Pooh.
  • He's getting tired of having to sit in his booster chair, and wants to sit in the normal chairs.
  • He counts 1-11, then 13, then 16. Then lots of random -teen numbers.
  • He loves playing at both Grandparents' homes.
  • When he goes to bed every night he waits til I'm in the kitchen with the door shut then yells, "Love You! Goodnight!"
  • He can say his own prayer on the food, and prayer at bedtime. But I often help him to increase the variety.
  • He holds his pencil/pen/crayon the correct way.
  • He's mostly right handed.
  • We haven't started potty training, but talk about it often.
  • Working on some of his sounds, like F.
  • He has an extremely happy disposition, is a generally well-behaved child, and makes my job so fun!

Cool Dude

The other day I ran across these shades that I thought were too cute to pass up. Johnny just loves them, and insisted on wearing them while he ate his breakfast a few days ago.

Watching TV

We don't really watch much TV around our house. The only TV that even gets reception is in my bedroom, and then it's only half of the freebie channels. So Johnny doesn't spend a great deal of time in front of TV, which I like. However, there are few shows that I'll let him watch every once in a while. His favorites: Super Why, Dinosaur Train, Word World, and Cat in the Hat.

I caught this shot of him the other morning watching Super Why. What a cutie!

Meeting a Prophet!

A few weeks ago I went on a date with a guy who is graduating this year from medical school at the U. He belongs to an organization called Collegium Aesculapium, a non-profit organization for LDS physicians. It was a dinner at the Hilton Hotel in Salt Lake, and the guest speaker was President Uchtdorf! And as luck would have it, we sat at the table just next to his. He gave a wonderful talk, and when it was all over, we got to shake hands with him! My date was much more eloquent than I -- I was so in awe I just mumbled something unintelligible. It was so humbling to meet a prophet, to be in his presence all night, and then to actually shake his hand. Say what you like about Utah, but it's neat living among prophets.

Happy 29th John!

John would have been 29 years old today. I wonder how old he is in Heaven? 5.62318934 billion? Do they even keep track there? Hmmm...

I told Johnny all day yesterday that today we were celebrating daddy's birthday, so he was pretty excited. We started by going to the Children's Museum in Ogden with my friend Katy and her son Emerson, who is only a few months younger than Johnny. They had lots of fun. Johnny was a bundle of energy running from one thing to the next! After that, we had lunch at Rumbi Grill where I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that I wasn't gonna have to clean up all the rice that spilled.

A quick trip to Base, and then we came home for naps (plural). A little playtime outside and then Grandma and Grandpa Alley came over. They took us out to a super nice restaurant for dinner - Sego Lily Cafe - right here in Bountiful. I have always wanted to go there, so it was an extra treat for me.

Then we headed over to see John's grave. I brought super yummy cupcakes and we (barely) lit some candles (the wind was blowing), sang Happy Birthday, and let Johnny blow out the candles. It was so great being there with my in-laws. I love them so much; they are the best people. Johnny ran around chasing robins, and Dave, Eva, and I all shared some of our favorite memories of John.

I miss him so much. There isn't a day that goes by when I don't think of him and miss him. I am not unhappy; there are lots of things for me to be grateful for, and lots of wonderful people in my life. I am so grateful for my faith which gives me the strength to trust in my Heavenly Father, that things are as they should be. And that everything is going to work out in the end. I just have to be patient, and make sure I do everything I can to fulfill my purpose here.

In honor of John, and for his birthday, I have created a new blog called I Still Have a Voice - a compilation of his journals and notebooks. I hope it brings inspiration to those who read it, and a smile on the face of those aching to see him again. Cuz faith or no faith, we still miss those we love.

Tami Chandler Photography -- Free Giveaway!

Hey everyone, my amazing sister Tami has officially launched her photography business. She's been doing photography for years (decades, really), but now she's got a legit business with a license and everything! :) If you visit her blog, you can enter to win a FREE photo session from her, or if you live far away, she'll send you a free print! (But I strongly encourage you NOT to enter, because that gives me a better chance of winning... he he, just kidding.)

Honestly, she's the best photographer I know. I've had several friends use her, so even if you don't win her giveaway, you should still check out her stuff in case you ever need to hire a photographer. You'll love her work!
